How swallowing actually works
When you swallow, food or liquid moves through three main stages:
- Oral phase – You chew and form a “bolus” (a soft mass of food).
- Pharyngeal phase – The throat muscles push the food downward while the airway briefly closes to prevent choking.
- Esophageal phase – Food travels through the esophagus into the stomach using rhythmic muscle contractions called peristalsis.
This entire process usually takes just a few seconds and is tightly controlled by your nervous system.
