Common myths about swallowing
Many online claims exaggerate or misrepresent what happens when you swallow. Here are a few common myths:
- “Swallowed objects stay in the body for years.”
False. Most non-digestible items either pass through the digestive system within a few days or require medical attention if they are too large or dangerous. - “Swallowing causes long-term damage in healthy people.”
Not true. Normal swallowing is safe. Problems only arise when there are underlying conditions like reflux, neurological disorders, or obstruction. - “The body can ‘lose control’ of swallowing suddenly without warning.”
In healthy individuals, swallowing remains consistent. Sudden difficulty usually signals a medical issue that should be evaluated. -
