A Prison Joke Told in Numbers — And One New Guy Changes Everything

This is a story about one such place—where jokes weren’t told in words, but in numbers.

A Strange System

In a certain prison, the inmates had been together for so long that they all knew the same jokes by heart. Over time, instead of repeating long punchlines, they came up with a shortcut.

Each joke was assigned a number.

Instead of telling the whole story, someone would simply call out:

“27!”

And suddenly, the entire room would burst into laughter.

Later, someone else might shout:

“103!”

Again—laughter echoed through the space.

To an outsider, it made no sense. But to the inmates, each number represented a fully remembered joke, complete with timing, delivery, and punchline.
