So, What Is It Really?

The so-called “vein” in shrimp isn’t a vein at all. It’s actually the shrimp’s digestive tract, also known as the intestine. This thin tube runs along the back (and sometimes the underside) of the shrimp and contains waste material—essentially, what the shrimp has been eating.

Because of its appearance and position, people began calling it a vein, and the name stuck, even though it’s not part of the circulatory system.
