Why Is It Removed?

Removing the digestive tract—a process often called “deveining”—is mostly done for two reasons:

  • Appearance: The dark line can be visually unappealing, especially in larger shrimp
  • Texture and cleanliness: While generally harmless, it can sometimes contain grit or sand, which may affect the eating experience
