My Neighbor Gave Me a Bag of These—Anyone Know What They Are? And How Do You Eat Them?
No label.
No explanation.
Just a generous handful of something unfamiliar.
If this has ever happened to you, you’re not alone. Gardens, markets, and generous neighbors have a way of introducing us to foods we’ve never cooked—or even seen—before.
First Things First: Don’t Panic (or Toss Them)
Before assuming they’re inedible, take a closer look:
- Shape and size – Are they round, long, bumpy, smooth?
- Color – Bright, dull, earthy, or vibrant?
- Texture – Firm, soft, leafy, dry?
Many commonly gifted foods turn out to be seasonal fruits, vegetables, or herbs that are perfectly normal in one kitchen and completely unfamiliar in another.
Common Possibilities
- A garden vegetable that grows fast and in abundance
- A fruit that ripens all at once
- A herb that’s too much for one household
- A traditional ingredient from another culture
These foods are often shared simply because there’s too much to use alone.
