What Are Milia?

Milia are tiny cysts filled with keratin, a protein found in skin, hair, and nails. They form when dead skin cells get trapped beneath the skin’s surface instead of shedding normally. They commonly appear:

  • On the eyelids
  • Under the eyes
  • Around the cheeks and nose
  • In clusters of small white or yellowish dots

Unlike pimples, milia are usually:

  • Firm to the touch
  • Not painful
  • Not red or inflamed
  • Difficult or impossible to squeeze out

They’re extremely common and generally harmless.
