Dr. Frank-N-Furter Changed Everything

When Curry played Frank-N-Furter, he created a character that would become permanently associated with his name.

At first, The Rocky Horror Picture Show was not an enormous mainstream success. Over time, however, midnight screenings, audience participation and word of mouth transformed it into a cultural phenomenon.

Decades later, Curry was still being celebrated for the role.

In November 2025, he made a rare public appearance alongside fellow cast members during celebrations marking the movie’s 50th anniversary. It was his final known public appearance.

He Also Gave Audiences a Terrifying Pennywise

For another generation, Curry was remembered for something completely different.

In the 1990 television miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s It, he portrayed Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

The performance became one of television horror’s most recognizable portrayals.

Curry’s Pennywise was unsettling not simply because of makeup or special effects, but because of the actor’s ability to shift between humor, charm and menace.

Years later, the performance remained a reference point whenever audiences discussed famous screen versions of the character.

A Voice That Reached Younger Generations

Curry’s influence also extended into animation.

He voiced Sir Nigel Thornberry, the eccentric father in Nickelodeon’s The Wild Thornberrys. The animated series introduced his distinctive voice and comedic timing to an entirely new generation.

In one of his final social-media posts, Curry reflected affectionately on the character and the series.

He also contributed voice performances to other animated and family productions, demonstrating once again that his career could not easily be placed into one category.

Life After His Stroke

Curry experienced a major stroke in 2012.

The event had a profound effect on his mobility and substantially reduced his live-action acting work. Nevertheless, he continued working in voice roles and remained connected with fans and fellow performers.

Rather than allowing his health struggles to completely remove him from entertainment, Curry continued contributing whenever he could.

His later career therefore became another chapter in a life defined by resilience and creativity.
