What Residents Should Do
People in potentially affected areas should avoid waiting until conditions deteriorate before preparing.
- Checking official hurricane forecasts regularly.
- Following evacuation orders immediately if authorities issue them.
- Securing outdoor furniture and loose objects.
- Keeping phones and emergency devices charged.
- Having essential medications, food, water, and other necessities available.
- Knowing where the nearest emergency shelter is located.
- Avoiding flooded roads and never attempting to drive through moving floodwater.
Residents should also make sure they understand the difference between a hurricane watch and a hurricane warning. A watch means hurricane conditions are possible, while a warning means those conditions are expected within the specified area and time period.
Beware of Viral Headlines
The phrase “A major hurricane is approaching” can sound alarming, but without a location, storm name, forecast track, or official warning, it does not tell readers enough to determine whether they are actually at risk.
For that reason, people should check the official National Hurricane Center and their local National Weather Service office for current information.
