What began as a recreational exploration quickly turned catastrophic when Jones mistakenly entered an extremely narrow unmapped passage instead of the larger route he intended to take. Crawling headfirst through a tight vertical crevice, he eventually became wedged upside down in a space barely wider than his body.
Suspended head-down for hours, Jones experienced mounting pressure on his heart and lungs as blood pooled in his upper body. Rescue experts later explained that prolonged inversion can severely restrict breathing and circulation, especially in confined spaces where movement is impossible.
Despite repeated attempts to free him, Jones remained trapped nearly 100 feet underground.
