And occasionally, they reveal truths nobody was supposed to hear.

That’s exactly what happened on a rainy Tuesday afternoon when my five-year-old daughter changed my life with a single sentence.

An Ordinary Afternoon

I was making dinner while my daughter, Sophie, colored at the kitchen table.

My husband, Mark, had just returned home from work and was scrolling through his phone.

Everything felt normal.

Comfortable.

Routine.

Then Sophie looked up from her crayons and asked a question.

“Mommy?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

She smiled innocently.

“Why does the lady in the red car pay Daddy to cry?”

The room instantly went silent.

The Look on His Face

I laughed at first.

“What do you mean?”

Before Sophie could answer, Mark dropped his phone.

His face drained of color.

“She’s talking nonsense,” he said quickly.

But Sophie continued.

“No, Daddy.”

“The red-car lady gives you envelopes.”

I stared at my husband.

He stared at Sophie.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then he stood abruptly.

“Sophie doesn’t know what she’s talking about.”

His voice sounded unusually sharp.

Our daughter looked confused.

I felt my stomach tighten.
