My cousins giggled every time we walked into a room together. Even my own mother whispered, “You could’ve done better.”
But Daniel never reacted.

At the time, Daniel worked long hours at a small tech company. We lived in a tiny apartment with peeling paint and secondhand furniture. Money was tight, but we were happy.
According to my relatives, I had “settled.”
Every night after work, he stayed awake for hours building software for a startup idea he believed in. There were months he barely slept. I’d wake up at 2 a.m. and find him still sitting at his laptop, exhausted but determined.
“Another fantasy project?” my cousin sneered during Christmas dinner.
Daniel simply nodded and kept eating.
One morning, Daniel received an email that would transform our lives forever. A major investor wanted to fund his software company after seeing a demo online.
Within two years, Daniel’s business exploded.
Suddenly, the same family members who mocked him began treating him like royalty.
My cousins wanted career advice.
Even my mother began bragging about him to neighbors as if she had supported him from the beginning.

But Daniel never rubbed his success in anyone’s face. He stayed the same humble man I married.
Until the day my family asked him for money.
It happened during my grandmother’s birthday dinner. Everyone was unusually nice that evening, which immediately made me suspicious.
After dessert, my older sister cleared her throat dramatically.
“So… we actually wanted to ask for a favor,” she said.
Daniel looked up calmly. “What kind of favor?”
Her husband leaned forward. “We’re in a bit of financial trouble. Business hasn’t been great lately.”

They wanted $20,000.
The table fell silent as everyone waited for Daniel’s response.
I knew my family assumed he’d say yes immediately. After all, to a millionaire, $20,000 probably seemed small.
