The security cameras were active.
And my brother-in-law, Kevin, offered to stop by every few days to water the plants.
“It’ll give you one less thing to worry about,” he said.
Looking back, that was our first mistake.
Coming Home
After ten wonderful days away, we pulled into our driveway just after sunset.
The front gate hung open.
The porch light was broken.
The living room looked as though a storm had swept through.
Broken furniture.
A shattered television.
Kitchen cabinets hanging open.
I stood frozen.
“Why?”
The Security Footage
We immediately reviewed our security cameras.
The answer appeared within minutes.
Kevin.
He hadn’t simply watered the plants.
He had invited friends over.
Not once.
Several times.
The footage showed gatherings that became increasingly reckless.
Furniture was moved.
Decorations were damaged.
Someone accidentally broke a window.
Another guest backed into our garage door.
By the final evening, the house looked nothing like the one we had left behind.
