That’s exactly what happened to me after my 12-year-old son returned from a school camping trip.
“You need to rush to school now,” she said.
I grabbed my keys immediately, my mind racing through every possible nightmare scenario. Was my son hurt? Had there been an accident? Was he in trouble?
A Camping Trip That Changed Everything
The sixth-grade class had gone on a weekend camping adventure organized by the school. For many of the students, it was the highlight of the year — hiking trails, roasting marshmallows, sleeping under the stars, and bonding away from phones and screens.
Among the students was my son’s close friend, a boy named Liam, who uses a wheelchair due to a spinal condition. Although Liam was excited about the trip, there were obvious limitations. Some hiking paths were rocky, steep, and impossible for his wheelchair to navigate safely.
That’s when my son made a decision nobody expected.
For nearly the entire trail, my 12-year-old carried Liam through dirt paths, uneven terrain, and steep hills so his friend could experience the adventure with everyone else.
