“There’s a girl in my class named Emma,” Lily explained. “She started chemotherapy last month. She says she doesn’t mind losing her hair, but I can tell she misses feeling like herself.”

Without another word, we scheduled an appointment at a local salon. As the stylist carefully cut more than twelve inches of hair, Lily smiled into the mirror.

“It’ll grow back,” she said. “Emma’s might take a while.”

I couldn’t have been prouder.

An Unexpected Phone Call

“Mrs. Carter,” he said, “I think you should come to the school. There’s something you need to see with your own eyes.”

My heart raced.

I feared the worst.

Within minutes, I was driving toward the school, imagining every possible scenario.
