How to Stop Maggots From Taking Over Your Trash Bin

1. Keep Your Trash Bin Clean

One of the biggest causes of maggot infestations is leftover residue stuck to the bottom or sides of the bin. Even small amounts of food waste can attract flies.

Wash your trash can regularly using hot water, dish soap, and disinfectant. After cleaning, allow the bin to dry completely before adding new garbage bags.

2. Double-Bag Food Waste

Food scraps should always be tightly sealed before being placed in outdoor bins. Meat, seafood, and spoiled food are especially attractive to flies.

Using double bags or tying bags securely helps reduce odors and prevents flies from reaching the waste.

3. Sprinkle Baking Soda or Salt

Many homeowners use baking soda, salt, or even cat litter at the bottom of the trash bin to absorb moisture and reduce odors.

Dry conditions make it harder for maggots to survive and discourage flies from laying eggs.

4. Close the Lid Tightly

An open or damaged lid gives flies easy access to garbage. Make sure the lid closes fully and remains shut whenever possible.

If your bin has cracks or gaps, replacing it may help prevent future infestations.

5. Avoid Leaving Trash Too Long

During hot weather, garbage should be removed frequently — especially kitchen waste containing food residue.

Allowing trash to sit for several days increases the chances of flies laying eggs.
