Common in Orchards
This practice is especially popular in fruit farming. Growers of crops like apple and citrus trees often use diluted white paint or lime mixtures to protect their trees during vulnerable seasons, particularly in winter and early spring.
What Kind of Paint Is Used?
In some traditional methods, a mixture of lime and water—known as whitewash—is used instead.
Does Every Tree Need It?
Not necessarily. Mature trees with thick bark are usually less vulnerable to sunscald and don’t require this treatment. It’s most beneficial for:
- Young trees with thin bark
- Newly planted trees
- Trees in areas with strong sunlight and temperature swings
