But confidence, it turns out, is not the same as certainty.

Within hours, the internet did what it does best. Forums lit up. Threads multiplied. People enhanced images, slowed down audio, translated fragments, and cross-referenced obscure databases. Experts chimed in. Amateurs dug deeper than experts. Entire communities formed around a single, stubborn question: What is this?

And yet, the more people searched, the stranger it became.
