Two houses down lived Mrs. Carter, a woman known for her strict opinions about “neighborhood standards.” She had already made comments about lawn heights, mailbox colors, and parking habits. So it wasn’t entirely surprising—though still shocking—when she marched over one morning, glaring at the ramp as if it were an eyesore.

“This is completely inappropriate,” she declared loudly, arms crossed. “You can’t just build things like this. It brings down property values.”

I tried to explain. I told her it was safe, temporary if needed, and most importantly, it made life easier for a child. She wasn’t interested in listening. She muttered something about “rules” and “consequences” before walking off.

We hoped that would be the end of it.

It wasn’t.
