What they do cause, however, is discomfort. An itchy scalp is often the first sign, triggered by a reaction to lice bites. In some cases, children may not even notice the itching right away, which is why the discovery can come as a surprise.

Lice are typically very small—about the size of a sesame seed—and can be grayish, tan, or slightly darker after feeding. They move quickly and can be difficult to spot. Even more noticeable than the lice themselves are their eggs, called nits, which attach firmly to hair strands close to the scalp.

If you find an insect on your child’s head, the first step is not to panic.

Carefully examine the scalp under good lighting. Look for additional signs, such as more insects or tiny oval-shaped nits attached to the hair. It can also help to use a fine-toothed comb to check more thoroughly.

If it does appear to be lice, treatment is straightforward and widely available. Over-the-counter shampoos and lotions are specifically designed to eliminate lice and their eggs. In addition, washing bedding, hats, and recently used clothing in hot water can help prevent reinfestation.

Equally important is communication. Informing your child’s school or caregivers allows others to check for symptoms and reduce further spread. While it may feel uncomfortable to share, it’s a common situation that many families face at some point.
