According to preliminary reports, the aircraft experienced a critical issue with its landing gear system while approaching Edwards AFB. The crew, trained extensively for such high-risk scenarios, made the decision to divert to a nearby dry lake bed—an area often used for emergency landings due to its wide, flat surface and minimal obstructions.

Witnesses reported seeing the bomber flying at low altitude before touching down nose-first, kicking up a large plume of dust as it slid across the desert terrain. Despite the dramatic landing, all crew members on board were safely evacuated, and no injuries have been reported.
