Figure or Background?

Many perplexing images rely on a classic psychological concept: figure-ground reversal. Your brain must decide what part of an image is the main subject (the figure) and what part is the background.

In some famous illusions, that choice can flip back and forth. What you first saw as empty space might suddenly become the central object.

Once your brain locks onto one interpretation, it can be surprisingly difficult to see the alternative — until someone points it out.
