A Symbol of Domestic Violence Awareness
Purple porch lights are most widely associated with efforts to raise awareness about domestic violence. The color purple has long been used as a symbol of courage, survival, and honor for those affected by abuse. Advocacy groups chose purple to represent solidarity with victims and survivors, as well as to encourage communities to speak openly about the issue.
The initiative is sometimes promoted through campaigns encouraging people to “shine a purple light” in their communities. When entire neighborhoods participate, the glowing lights can become a powerful visual reminder that the issue exists and that survivors are not alone.
