She looked confused. “He had a custom label printed. He told me he slipped a tiny rolled message inside the base of the bottle. You were supposed to see it after the scent settled — he said it was symbolic.”
I couldn’t breathe.
She smiled softly. “He was going to propose. The note asked if you’d marry him.”
The Truth I Learned Too Late
The perfume wasn’t random.
It was the scent I wore on our first trip together. The jasmine reminded him of the night we got caught in the rain. The vanilla was because I once said it felt like home.
And hidden inside the base — accessible only if you gently twisted it open — was a tiny piece of paper.
A proposal.
A future.
A question I never even knew was asked.
