Dents, on the other hand, can vary in severity. A small dent on the side of a can may not necessarily mean the food is unsafe. However, if the dent is deep—especially if it’s along the seams or near the lid—it can weaken the seal and allow bacteria to enter. Combined with a puffed lid, a dent becomes an even bigger red flag.

It’s also important to resist the temptation to “just check” by opening the can. If harmful bacteria are present, opening it could expose you to contaminants. In some cases, there may be a release of pressurized gas or unpleasant odors, but even that isn’t a reliable safety test.
