How to Keep Your Home Warm During a Power Outage

The first step is to conserve as much existing warmth as possible. Close all windows and doors tightly, and use towels, blankets, or even clothing to block drafts at the base of doors. Heat escapes easily through small gaps, so sealing these areas helps maintain the temperature inside your home.

Next, focus on creating a “warm zone.” Instead of trying to heat the entire house, choose one room—preferably smaller and with fewer windows—and gather everyone there. Close off unused rooms to prevent heat from spreading too thin. This allows body heat and any alternative heat sources to be more effective.

Layering is another simple but powerful strategy. Wear multiple layers of clothing, including thermal wear, sweaters, and thick socks. Blankets, sleeping bags, and even coats can help trap body heat. Covering your head is especially important, as a significant amount of heat can be lost from the scalp.
