Separating Fact from Fear

While it’s always wise to stay aware of your surroundings, many of these claims are overstated or taken out of context.

For instance, rumors about secret codes used by criminals to mark homes have circulated for years. In most cases, these claims have been debunked or found to be misunderstandings. Chalk marks, stickers, or symbols are far more likely to be related to utility work, construction planning, or even harmless pranks rather than organized crime.

Similarly, seeing a particular type of vehicle or unfamiliar object in your area doesn’t automatically indicate danger. Neighborhoods are constantly changing, with deliveries, maintenance crews, and visitors coming and going.
