The idea is that when a driver attempts to lock their vehicle using a key fob, the door with the coin may not lock properly. While the driver checks the issue, someone could approach unnoticed.
However, automotive experts and law enforcement agencies have generally found little evidence that this is a widespread or common tactic. Modern vehicles use electronic locking systems that are unlikely to be disabled by a small coin placed in the handle.
