Cold air pours in under the garage door and the repair company can’t come until after New Year. What can I do now?

1. Use a Door Draft Stopper (or Make One)

A draft stopper is one of the fastest solutions. If you don’t have one, you can easily DIY it:

• Roll up an old towel, blanket, or bath mat
• Place it tightly along the bottom inside edge of the garage door
• For extra effectiveness, tape it in place so it doesn’t shift

This can dramatically reduce cold airflow in minutes.

2. Seal Gaps with Foam or Weatherstripping

If the gap is uneven or wider in spots:

• Use temporary foam weatherstripping or rubber door seals
• Peel-and-stick versions are quick and removable
• Focus on the largest gaps where you feel the strongest air movement

This helps trap heat without damaging the door.

3. Plastic Sheeting for Emergency Insulation

Clear plastic sheeting (or even a heavy trash bag in a pinch) can act as a barrier:

• Tape it over the inside of the door where air leaks are worst
• Make sure it’s secure and not near moving parts
• This works especially well during extreme cold snaps

4. Cardboard or Insulation Boards

If cold air is pouring in heavily:

• Cut cardboard, foam board, or insulation panels to fit the bottom section
• Press or tape them into place temporarily
• This is effective for stopping both drafts and heat loss

5. Close the Door Between the Garage and the House

If your garage is attached:

• Keep the interior door closed at all times
• Add a towel or draft stopper at that door too
• This prevents cold air from spreading indoors
