Photographer of tragic little girl trapped in volcanic mudflow explains why he didn’t help her

The Disaster Behind the Photograph

After a volcanic eruption triggered massive mudflows, entire communities were buried. Rescue teams struggled to reach survivors due to destroyed roads, unstable ground, and a lack of heavy equipment. Among those trapped was a young girl, pinned by debris and water.

She was not alone with the photographer. Rescue workers, doctors, and volunteers were already present, doing everything they could with extremely limited resources.

Why the Photographer Couldn’t Save Her

The photographer later explained several key points:

• He was not a rescuer
  He had no equipment, training, or physical ability to free her. Moving debris without proper tools could have caused further harm.
• Rescue attempts were already underway
  Professionals at the scene had determined that freeing her would require machinery that simply wasn’t available at the time.
• Staying would not change the outcome
  Remaining with her did not prevent others from working, nor would leaving his camera behind have enabled a rescue.

His role, he said, was to bear witness—to document what was happening so the world would know.

The Power—and Burden—of the Image

The photograph caused an international outcry. It drew attention to the lack of emergency preparedness, poor infrastructure, and slow disaster response that worsened the tragedy.

As a result:
