👖 It’s Not a Coin Pocket — It’s a Watch Pocket
Originally, that small pocket was designed to hold a pocket watch.
So Levi’s designed jeans with a fifth pocket — specifically to protect pocket watches from damage while working in harsh conditions.
In the 1890 Levi’s catalog, it was even referred to as a “watch pocket.“
🕰️ Why Is It Still There?
Pocket watches are long gone for most of us, but the tiny pocket has remained a staple of jeans design for over a century. Why?
- Tradition – It’s a nod to denim’s heritage.
- Style – The pocket adds a classic, rugged detail to the jeans’ look.
- Functionality (sort of) – While it may not hold a watch anymore, people use it for coins, guitar picks, rings, lighters, USB drives, or tiny treasures.
🤔 Fun Fact: It’s Actually the Fifth Pocket
You may think jeans only have four pockets, but that tiny one is officially considered the fifth. Classic jeans have:
- Two back pockets
- Two front pockets
- One small “watch” pocket inside the right front pocket
That’s five.
